The competition between Markdown, LaTeX, Quarto, and more recently Typst editors has never been greater, in my opinion.
It is important to have something that is open source, free, European/Swiss, and above all private and secure. I am a researcher in chemistry and have recently started using Zettlr, but even so, it is not yet the perfect solution. But it could be! I think Zettlr could focus more on compatibility with these academic formats, but what I feel Zettlr is missing is mainly a more polished, more beautiful user interface, AI support (it doesn't have to be the best, it just needs to be European/Swiss, secure, and private), and especially an Android app.
I'm in the lab and I miss being able to access my Markdown notes through Zettlr on my tablet. And yes, I know I have editors like Markor to access on Android tablets and phones (because I store my work on Infomaniak kDrive). But it's not the same thing. I think that if we're going to do this, we have to go all in. These are things that I miss, and I'm sure other researchers feel the same way if they're not difficult to implement...
