I like Zettlr for writing small reports and exporting them to pdf. That works great. In the past I used it to make a presentation from the same files I used for a personal report for school, which also worked great.
Now, I went to using .md files like this: on MacOS, I used rtf to make notes, because text-editor opened fast and I could use some basic formatting (bold, lists). On Linux (and Windows), rtf is opened by a full word-processor, not by a small text-editor. This is how I learned about markdown.
One disadvantage of Zettlr is, that it opens not as fast as a simple text-editor. Even when I leave Zettlr open, files open less fast then with a text-editor.
I guess I should try some light-weight md-editors. A disadvantage of a lot of these are (a bit like Zettlr): you see text unformatted, not like rtf-files in the mac-text-editor.
