I've been writing a 2500 word (+/- 10%) paper, and happily completed a draft at 2740 words. I then exported to .docx format for submission, and checked in LibreOffice for formatting before submiting.
Sadly I discovered the word count (excluding ref list) was over 3,000 words - an extra 10%!
I think I found the problem - Zettlr's word count completely ignores in text citations. It doesn't even count the cite key. So a citation like 'Erz et al (2026)' counts as zero words, not four (or even one citekey.
This is a pretty serious issue as I cannot trust word count in Zettlr at all!
Am I missing a setting that ignores in text citations, or is this a bug?
