Citation in footnote with markdown?

I'm not sure if this is possible. I am writing my book in markdown, exporting text in Word. I know how to make a footnote, but I don't know how to insert citation in a footnote.

References At the end of book

Sztompka, Piotr. 2004. “The Trauma of Social Change: A Case of Postcommunist Societies.” In Cultural trauma and collective identity, edited by Jeffrey C. Alexander, 155–95. Berkeley, Calif.; London: University of California Press.

I have defined my .bib file, and citing work great IF it is in body text.

Any help, please?
