Referencing figures

I can't find any documentation for how to reference figures, tables, equations etc. from within a text, e.g.,

...driven by the changing density structure with depth (Fig. 1a)

As I'm writing scientific papers and a thesis, it's vital to be able to do this. It's easy with LaTeX, and with Ulysses I was using pandoc-xnos, but I can't get it to work with zettlr.

With pandoc-xnos, I use the markdown


and reference it in the text using +@fig:fig_label

The figure numbering is then managed automatically. Has anyone got anything similar working in zettlr?
